The whaling industry has great IV declined from tlie importaut position it occupied in tlie early colonial vears of Xew Zealand, only oue shore station being in commercial operation now. This is in Tory Channel, Queen Chal--lotte Sound, and its catches are made from comparatively nearby vaters.
