BERNBOROUGH BREAKS DOWN IN MACKINNON STAKES

^ MEIiBOURNE CUP MEETING OPENS. - Reeeived Sunday, 7 p.m. ' ' •MELBOURNE, Nov. 3. There was a sensation in the L. K. S. Alackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, in which the champion Bernborough was a lirm favourite. Flight as usual took the lcad earlyj followed by Bernb'orougli. liounding the home turn, Bernborough moved forward and appeared to have the leader covered. While going easily, Bernborough moved up ,and appeared iikely to take the lead, but suddeniy faitered and ranf out. Jockey Briscoe pulled the ehainpion up and dismounted. Flight went on and had an easy victory from Tea Cake and .Spam. With Brnborougli now out of the weight-for-age races, Flight appears to hold a mortgage on those races. She is now likely to pass Tranquil Star's record of being the greatest stake winner mare on the Australian turf. Flight has now won £28,539 in stake^, as against Tramjuil Star's £29,690. Bernborough sustained an injury near the fetloclc sesaomoid bone. Plant, the trainer, stated that he considered having difficulty in saving the horse for the stud,. The horse was very game and, despite the pain, was taken in a float to the stable. The Derby result was a setback for the majorty of backers. Prince Standafd failed to stay the mile and a half in tiie Sydney Derby, although he was considered to huve an excellent chance, His stable companion Concerto., outstaycd the opposition in that race and won by half a head from Flying Duke. Prince Standard, oue of the outsiders of the race, finished strongly to defeafc Tribuual, who appeared all over tlie vvinner wlien he took the lead a furiong from liome. Proctor just atruggfed along to gain third place. The favour*ite, Flying Duke, failed badly after liaving every chance. Concerto rau to tlie front soon after catering tlie straight but failed to stay. Star Aefc was uever a possibility, ncither was Two Grand oue of the best backed horses in the Derby and Cup. In the Cantala Stakes, St. Fairy, wfio proved himscif oue of the best horsjes racing in Victoria the last few seasons, timshed determinedly to defeat The Sirdar and La Patrice. St. Fairy won the Caulfield Cup last year. After a apell St. Fairy returned to work some time ago. As he requires little racing to bring hina to top form, lic was made the medium of a plunge in the division of the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Yaliey last Saturday. He failed badly in that race, but his connections supported hiiu. solidly yesterday. Thc result ;justified the opinion as St. Fairy finished full of running and held off Tlie Sirdar to win by a neck. La Patrice attempted to lead all the way and lasted inside a furlong from home, but then wreakened slightly. Attley, the favourite, was never prominent. Chaytor, topweight^ and favourite in the Hotham HandicfiT),i; outpaeed and outstayed the field. Hfij 'dttlWatfed Knovkai'low ■by-'» length rand ia quarter, with Oatealce a ' close third. Chaytor is not engaged in the Melbourne Cup, but ten other, '• starters are final acceptors. Knoekarlow.-.and Oatcake rau fairly well, but ^iUkavekto improve consiclerably . to hay'e fi chance in . the Melbour.ne Cup. Other starters inclbded Stenelaus, Little Tieh, and Cherie1 Marie; who failed badly and their cux) ehanees appear hopeless.
