D.F.C. RECEIVED
BRAVE AIRMAN S MOTHER One of the first offi'cial acts by the Governor-Generai, Sir Bemard Freyberg, on the occasion of his visit to Palmerston North recently, was the investiture at the home of Mrs. Harkness, at one time a resident of Te Horo, of the Distinguished Flying Cross, won by her son, the late Warrant Officer D. A. Harkness. " The details of the citation accompanying the decoration were as follows: — "Warrant Officer Harkness has proved himself to be of great value to the squaaron on so many occasions. In January,- 1944, he was aetailed to bornb Ceeina (Italy) . Despite poor weather and engine trouble, he completed his mission and returned safely, even though the port engine eventually failed and he had to fly for three hours on one engine. He has at all times displayed outstanding gallantry and resource." Warrant Officer Harkness died in the Middle East in July, 1944, as the result of an accident. The many friends of Mrs. Harkness will regret to .learn that she is seriously ill at her home in Palmerston North.
