MAGISTRATES TOO OLD
Reeeived Thursdav, 8.35 p.m. • LONDON, Oet., 31. Giving evidence before a Royal Commission which is reviewing tlie system of appointing .luslices of the Peace, the Lord Ohancellor, Sir W. A. .Tovvilt, said he was strongly of opinion that Magistrates tended to be too old. He cited one Bench on which the average age was 77 with one Alagistrate nearly OIO years of age. Ln Glouceslershire, of 18 active Magistrates, nine were over 70, and two over 80. He added that it was impossible to dismiss politics altogether in tiie appointment 'of Magistrates. He wanted a proper balancc maintained but because there was now a large Ltibour majority, he had no intention of tlooding the Benches with Labour Magistrates.
