Reeeived Thursday, 8.35 p.m. CANBERRA, Oct. 31. Dr. H. V. Evatt was todav elected Uejmty Prime Minister. Fivo candid.ales submitted tliemselves for elect.ion after vaueus liad reappointed Mr. Uliifley leader. They wero Dr. Evatt, Messrs Ward, Dedman, Ua 1 well aiul Drakeford. Mr. DraUeford was first elirninated from the bnllot followed immcdiatcly by M essrs Ualwell and Dedman. There was a tense silence as tlie returning officor, Mr. Rosevear, re-enter-ed the party room to count tlie votes. The more extreme elements would have preferred either ilr. Ward or Mr. Ualwell as Deput.v Prime Minister and when Mr Ualwell was elirninated, ap- ■ larenlly most of his supporters voted for Mr. Ward. Dr. Evatt -won 42 to 33, illustrating the strength of the Left wing sevion of eaucus which included niany new senators. Uaucus tlien commenced balloting for Uabinet. In the lirst ballot all the llouse of Representatives members of the old Uabinet were returned with the except ion of the Minister of llousing, Mr. Laz/.arini. The elected are Messrs Dedman, Holloway, Ualwell, Scullv, Ward, Drakeford, .Tohnson, Lemmonand Pollard and Senators Ashley and McKenna. Two new faces are Messrs Lemmon and Young, capable West Australian, and JMr. Pollard, once a yiinister in the Yictorian Government.
