DEPARTMENT CANNOT ASSIST

UPKEEF OF LOCAL DOMAIN In reply to a request' for "information as to whether grants were* made by the Internal Affairs Department to local bodies for the upkeep and improvements of sports grounds, the Under-Secretary to the Minister advised the Shannon Borough Council that grants under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, 1937, were available on a subsidy basis of £1 fbr £2. The purpose for which grants were made was to enable the provision of recreation facilities, the extension of existing facilities, or the purchase of equipment. Whether or not the grant was made depended on the nature of the case stated. Grants were not available merely for the purpose of assisting an organisation to carry on with its normal activities, and any organisation had to prove conclusively that financial assistance was desired to extend its activities, and without such assistance it could not do so. In addition it was essential that a special effort had been made to raise additional funds to carry out the project.
