LABOUR FOR PUBLIC WORKS
C ONTRACTORS' DIFFICULTY AUCKLAND, Oct. 30. The diiliculty of obtaining labour for public works was again strosscd at a meeting of tlie Auckland Metropolitan Drainagc Board when tenders for the construction of two portions of a branch sewer wero received. Only two contractors submitted priccs for tln work which is to drain areas in Alount Albert, Avoiidale and Mount Eoskill. When the contracts were advertisod six lirms took plans and specilications, said the Board 's chief engineer, Mr. W. H. Watkins. Oue iirm submitted a tender for boths jobs and another for oue of the jobs. The others said they could uot tender because of labour sliortage. From that it appeared tlie lirms were not much better olf tlian the board. The tenders were the lirst that had been ealled by tlie board since 1936. Oue tender totalling £14,828 was received for a major contract wliich had been est-imated to eost £17,796. It Avill be acceiited if found to be in order. Two tenders for part of tlie work Avliicli ivas estimated to cost £4560, were referred to a sub-committee.
