SALVAGING OF VESSEL

Eeceived Wednesdav, 7 p.m. LONJDON, Oct. 29. iSalvage history was made today when the forward half of the 7000 ton American ship, Ilelena Ivod.jeska, which broke in two while stranded on tlie Goodwin Bands last month, was beached at Dcal tonight. It is lyiiig so close to Ihe slern portion that workmen on eacli half are able to wave and cheer each other. Since the vessel first stranded nnmerous attempts had been made to relloat it and save tlie cargo valued at £750, 000. Tugs made several unsuccessful efforts to drag the sliip from the sands and it was feared the cargo would be lost when slie broke hor back and the stern and forward lialves parted to a dislanco of several hundred yards. Finallv the stern half was rcfloated with tlie liclp of kedge auchors. Today tho same method was nsed to refloat the second portion. It is now expected that all but £8000 worth of cargo wliich consists of vehicles and food from the American Army of Occupation, will be sah'aged.
