A FAREWELL FUNCTION
MR. AND MRS. BERRY GUESTS Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Berry, who Leave shortly to take up residenee at Waipukurau after heing residents of Otaki for some time were recently entertained by the Chinese of Otaki and district in recognition of the great help they had been to the Chinese, both in this district and Ohakune, where Mr. and Mrs. Berry had previously resided. The Chinese Association's rooms were the scene of a dinner served in elaborate style and in true Eastern custom, when the opportunity was taken to farewell the popular and highly-respected couple. Among the visitors were leading Chinese from Wellington and the Main Trunk district. Mr. G. H. Gow, of Otaki, stated that he spoke on behalf of the Chinese, who wished to express smcere regret that Mr. and Mrs. Berry were leaving the district, and that the time had come for his countrymen. to lose so staunch a friend, but all "hoped that at no distant date both Mr. and Mrs Berry would return to Otaki and take up permanent residenee. In asking Mr. Berry to accept a cheque from the Chinese, he wished the parting guests health and happiness in their new home. (Annlause) .
Mr. Sang Lee, of Levin, endorsed the remarks of the speaker, but said he would not say goodbye, but au revoir. Mr. Berry, on rising to acknowledge the good wishes of those present, was received with cheers. He said it was with mixed feelings that he was leaving the district. He had at all times endeavoured to see the problems of the Chinese from their own viewpoint, and in this direction he had attained a certain amount of success. At all times he had been treated by the community with the utmost courtesy, and as a friend. (Applause) .
