ENGLISHMEN OPEN AGAINST SOUTH AUSTRALIA
- - •" - — , Received Eriday, 8.5 p.m, ADELAIDE, Oct. 25. Hutton and Wasnbrook were in perfect form against Soutk Australia, led bjr Bradmaii, in a iriateh. on the Adelaide Oval. The Weather was ideal and the wicket good. Hutton proved his world class batsmanship against bowling always accurate and with some devil. Brilliant legside play, combined with fast, hard cover and straight driving, were features of Hutton 's knoek. Washbrook was little behind the crack, without ' his solidity. The pair were unseparated before tea. Hutton reached 50 in 102 minutes, 19 minutes faster than Washbrook. The Laneashire man was ' more aggressive. His best shot, the square eut, was perfeetly timed and forceful. Bradman belied reports of eontinued ill-health and showed his old time speed in the field and his returns were fast and accurate to the keeper. Dooland and Noblett, the piclt of the South Australian bowlers, were supported by sound fielding. The score reached 50 in 66 minutes and the century in 112 minutes. Then the English > batting developed into a dreary affair. The Hutton and Washbrook unfinished opening partnership was getting slower as the day progressed. Hutton completed his century at a snail like pace after tea. The secoud 50 took 157 minutes. At one stage he scored 22 singles in 25 runs. Washbrook was slightly faster over the second half century, his runs being scored in 150 minutes. Both centuries, Hutton 's in 259 minutes and Washbrook's in 271 minutes, were the slowest seeu at Adelaide in years. The only uotable feature of the partnership was its relentlessness. The wicket was: suitable for much faster rungetting. B"oth batsmen scored six fours in the century. In passing 223, the partnership became a record iirst wicket for England against South Australia, beating Suteliffe and ' Leyland in 1932-33. The batsmen were' never nienaced. The bowling and lielding were sound at the end of the day. Scores at stunips: — ' ENGLAND. First Innings.
