AU CKIjAND, Oct. 25. The cost to the New Zealand Government in sea freight alone of the 8700 tons of railway coal hrouglit froni Portland, Oregon, to Auckland hy the American freighter, Edward Kavanagh this week, is expected to he mere than 10,000. This estimate does not include rail and wharf nandling charges at each end and suhstantial demurrage incurred during the maritime strike at Portland. The total freight charges are likely to form a large proportion of the reported landed cost of ahout £10 a ton. Screened coal from Westport delivered at Auckland costs £2 7s a ton.
