Island in July, 1945, restoration work on telephone circuits.. is still being carried out by linesmen of the Post Offiee and permanent work will not be eompleted until about a year from now. The superintending engiueer of the Post Offiee/ Mr. W; M. B. Veitch, who has just returned from a tour of inspection, reports that good progress is being made, the stafE having done ^ fine work under unfavourable conditions. The overall cost would be approximately £460,000, said Mr. Veitch, who added that apart from storm damage some work would have been neeessary on the reconstruction of the line to facilitate the provision of more toll circuits and provide for the installation of the latest f orm of carrier equipment. Beconstruction of the line between Christchurch aud Ealing on a permanent basis, and of other toll lines, was almost- eompleted. Mr. Veitch said 10,000 subseribers, 6000 of them in Christchurch, had lost the' service through the storm and he paid tribute to the Army and Air Eorce who helped with equipment, operators and radio sets • to restore communication. • •
