SHANNON'S MEETING

Mrs. J. A. Easton. presided over the October meeting of the Shannon Women's Institute, held recently. A welcome was extended to Miss Adrian (Dannevirke), Mrs. Clark, an erstwhile member (Te Horo) and Mesdames Shirnack (Te Horo), Clancey (Timaru) and Foote and K. Pain (Shannon) , who were visitors. Mrs. Easton also expressed pleasure at having Mrs. Allerby with them again and welcomed the following new members: — Mesdames Rees and Holland and Misses Aldeth Pedersen and Joan Radford. The birthday party was discussed and it was decided that each member take a plate and one shilling, and that ■ the public would be admitted at one shilling each. The party, which was to have been held in the Parish Hall on Thursday, was postponed until a future date because of the number of other attractions on in the district. A committee was also set up to arrange a programme. Mesdames R. Roberts and L. A. Stratford were appointed delegates to the half-yearly council meeting, to be held at Kelvin Grove. The agenda and remits were read. It was decided to invite members of the Foxton Institute to be present at the. November meeting, when Mrs. S. H. Roberts will give a talk on gardening. Arrangements were made for the forthcoming flower show. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Tremewan and S. Pedersen. A competition was won by Mrs. Clancey. Mesdames Alf Thomson and R. Lang were appointed hostesses for the November meeting. The competitions for next month will be for the three heaviest hen eggs, double yokes excluded. The monthly competitions resulted:— Cluster: Mrs. C. Stern 1, Mrs. A. E. Tremewan 2, Mrs. J. Sinclair 3; Single bloom: Mesdames J. A. Easton and J. T. Bovis 1 (equal), Mrs. J. Sinclair and Miss A. Sinclair 2 (equal), Mesdames Stern, T. Bell and Tremewan 3 (equal). Shrub: Joan Radford 1, Mrs. W. Radford 2, Mrs. C. Stern 3. Thrift article: Mrs. Sinclair. Darned sock: Mrs. J. Sinclair.
