LEVIN TENNIS CLUB
NEW SEASON OPENED . Bad weather spoilt the open-*" ing ceremony of the Levin Tennis- Ciuu last Saturday when ' the 1946 season wasofficially commenced. Some 40 members; their friends. and members of other clubs gather to do honour to the occasron, amonget whom were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and l.frs. H. B. Burdekin) , the patron (Prefessor F. P. Wilson) , the president (Dr. S. J. Thompson) , Mrs. Thompson and members of che Weraroa and Manakau Tennis Clubs. At an apprepriate juncture the iadies of the club served a dainty afternoon tea, before which the president welcomed all those present and said how much all regretted the inclemency of the weather,. H 3 said the club had welcomed home the remainder of its members from active service, and all looked forv/ard to a highly suc- . cessful season. The handicap and championship trophies would again be competed for this year, the first time since 1939, He concluded by asking the patron to declare the season open.
In opening the season, Professor Wilson declared that it gave him considerable pleasure to be present, and to have the opporturfity of once agaih participating _ in the activities of a game to which, as a young man, he hacl given considerable time. He recalled that while president of the management committee of the Wellington Lawn Tennis A'Ssociafcion he had had the pleasure of seeing many of the [elder champions in action. It was interesting, he said, to compare the styles adopted 30 years ago with those of the present New _ Zealand champion, R. MacKenzie, illustrating the comparison to the keen interest of his hearers. He concluded by wishing everyone keen, ■ pleasant and successful tennis, and the club a highly profitable season. He then declared the 1946-47 season open. Prior to the dispensing of tea, the club captain, Mr. G. H. Sorenson, welcomed Mrs, Wilson, Mrs. Thompson and members of the Weraroa and Manakau Clubs* He said that the opening of the season's festivities would be continued on Friday evening in the * Regent Ballroom, when the club was holding a grand opening of the season dance, to which all were invited. This concluded the official part of the afternoon and over a cup of tea those present spent an enjoyable half hour in reminiscence and in anticipating things to come.
