Person rtl At Tuesday's meeting of the Horowhenua Power Board, -mention was made by Major-General R. Young of the receht award of the M.I.D. to Mr. T. H. Sunley, a member of the board's staff at Shannon. It was decided that- a letter of congratulations be sent Mr. Sunley. Large Run of Whitebait Saturday and Sunday saw a particularly good run of whitebait in the Manawata River. Some good catches were reported but it was later stated that the water was too clear for good results. A fresh in the river would improve matters. According to regulations in the possession of the Inspector of Fisheries, the preseni wnitebait season closed on November' 15. There was same mention of extending the season, but so far nothing official has been received. Heavy Winds In keepmg with other parts • of the distnct, Shannon has had its share of heavy winds during the past few days. Velocities recorded at the local station show that at 4 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, from
an aimost aeaa cairn, tne wina rose to 52 miles per hour. Heavy winds were recorded throughout the night and Monday, the average being about 30 m.p.h. Tuesday's average was 30 m.p.h., with gusts reaching. 40 m.p.h.. Yesterday's average was 30 to, '35 m.p.h., with gusts up to 42 m.p.h. Aimost A Frost The cold snap which set in ovei the weekend was responsible for a liberal coating of - snow on the Tararua Ranges on Monday, and the threat of a lieavy frost gave worry to many home gardeners with early crops of voung plants. Many residents were seen covering their gardens with straw and newspapers. However, as the evening progressed the sky'clouded and it became warmer. v,] A frost was averted,.-but* it was-ra near miss. Gardeners will not find. much consolation in remembering that Labour Day frosts ■ are ,iiot uncommon in this district.
