Despite a warning by ' Mr. Plant, trainer of Bernborough, not " to back the champion in the Melbourne Cup 11 a ti 1 a final deeision is made as to his starting, Melbourne . and. inter-State Bupport for the champion is very heavy. Mr. Plant, who is said to have been given the final deeision by the owner, Mr. Romano, says "he will eonsider the matter in a few days. Previously Mr. Plant announced himsell against starting. A similar position arose before the Caulfield Cup. No statement has been ma.de for some time but continued suppoft indicated a start. On present in- • dications Bernborough geems likely to start in the Melbourne Cup. A suggestion is made that A. Mulley, his usual jock'ey, will be replaced if Bernborough started in the Cup. Mulley stated before leaving for SyJney that neither the owner nor trainer had expressed dissatisfaction with his handling of the horse in the Caulfield Cup. He would ride him in weight-for-age raees and in the Cup if he started. He expressed confidence that he will win the Cup. It is said Bernborough, in recent races, appeared to be getting sour. He kicked while at the barrier for the Caulfield Cup. After the race he want ed to have a go at the horse nearest him. Such danger signs may indicate the start of Bernborough 's end as a racehorse. Flying Duke, who worked attractively with Kussia and Monmouth yesterday, is expeeted to run well in the E. >3. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday. This race is likely to prove a good guide for the Derby as most leading candidates in that raee are engaged. , St. Fairy, who is being specially prepared for the- Melbourne Cup, continues to please its trainer and is expeeted to have a great rhce ia the Cup. Mag uificent, in fini's.hing sixth. in the Caulfield Cup, shovyed his best form for a considerable time. Last year he wou the Derby and now is expeeted to show to advantage in the Cup. The Moouee Valley Cup me,eting will be definitely held on Saturday despite the tramway and railway strike at Mel bourne. Present indications are that the dispute may last beyond the week end.
