SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENDS
BADMINTON CLUB„ CLOSES A fltting closing; night of the Shannon Badminton Club's 1946 season was held in the Druids' Hall 'on Monday evening. Visitors were present from the Ohau Club and an enjoyable evening was spent. Following the most enjoyable supper, provided by the ladies of the club, the president (Mr. L. Burling) extended a welcome to the Ohau members and hoped that an enjoyable evening, would be spent. Mr. Burling extended thanks to his officers and to all club members for the -co-operation they had given during the season, and hoped that next season Shannon would have a larger and much stronger club. In making reference to the newly formed sub-association, Mr. Burling said that the organisation would be a great benefit to badminton in this district, and he felt sure that under its guidance better arrangements would be made -for inter-club matches. Mention was then made of the club's activities during the past Season. The A team had played six matches and had won three, the total games played were 134, the" team having won 51 and lost 83. The total points scored by the. team was 1584 against 1615. Taking all into considerabion the A team had done very well, as on a number of occasions they had to draw on the B team for players. Consequently, the B team had suffered and their efforts during the season were not so good, having played six matches, one of which was won. Of the 134 games played the team had won 35 and lost 99. However, it was hoped that next season a much stronger B team I would be available. Two "Yankee" tournaments were held, the first on May 13, the winners being Miss J. Pigott and Mr. D. Richards and the runners-up were Miss II. Gardner and Mr. A. S. Hyde. The second tournament was held on May 23, the winners then being Mrs. C. D. Gyde and Mr. G. Clough and the runners-up were Miss A. Pedersen and Mr. D. Richards. To these members, Mr. Burling extended congratulations. The club's social activities had been very- pleasant ones. A firm friendship had been worked up among the other clubs, especially with the Ohau people, and several most delightful evenings had been spent both on and ofi the courts. The club had recently held a most successful ball, and it was hoped that this event could be made an annual affair. In replying on behalf of the visitors, Mr. H. Benning extended his club's thanks for the invitation to attend the closing of the Shannon Club. He congratulated the club on its efforts during the season, and wished it every success in the future. Mr. Benning also made reference to the sub-associa-tion and the benefit it would be tc the various clubs next season.
