BERNBOROUGH MAY NOT START IN CUP

Received Tuesday, 10.20 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. Discussions on the Melbourne Cup have been stifled owing to doubt about Bernborough 's programme. /rhe oWner, Mr. . Romauo, has left the deeisiou to his trainer, ' Mr. Plant, regarding a •start in the Cup. Mr. Plant personally is averse to starting but is considering the position. The owner and trainer will not make a final' decision until the end of the week. ( Mr. G. Badman, owner of Royal Gem, stated that if Bernborough started in the Melbourne Cup his horse would not be a certain runner.' If Bernborough were a non-starter then Royal Gem was a certain starter. Both horses have done cxtra well since the Caulfield Cup. The craek South Australian three-year-old Conservator will have his first start in Victoria in the Phoenix Handicap at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Conservator has 3Cored eleven firsts and four minor places in his only 15 starts. In the last three starts he won the Adelaide Guiueas, Port Adelaide Guineas and S.A.J.C. Derby.^ The Derby favourite, Flying Duke, will have his first race in Melbourne in the W. S. Cox Plate at the Valley on Saturday. Concerto, the A.J.C. Derby winner, and Prinee Standard, are other likely starters. Flying Duke went extra well over ten furlongs at Flemington this morning. With Russia and Monmouth they ran the distance in 2.16^. Cordale, winner of the Metropolitan, who appears to retain his form, also went well on the traeks. The popuiar Melbourne Cup candidate lvnockarlow continues to iniprove and showed great dash in a five furlongs sprint. The Derby candidate Bold Beau appears to have improved since his good race iii the Caulfield Guineas and galloped well over a mile today. Two Grand, since his third in the Caullield Cup, has lirmed for the Derby and Cup. His work today indicated that he had taken no harm from that race and seems likely to be prominent in any future race.
