Borough Council Meets The Levin Borough Council held its monthly meeting lasc evening, rne Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) presidmg. Tnere were present: ors. H. b. Bowen, A. O. Powell, C. .ti. Cockreli, V. E. Hudson, W. Teilord, D. J. Gardmer, F. D. Chainey and F. E". Farxer. Also Messrs. H. L. Jenkins (town clerK), R.. Mcllraith tassistant) , P. S. Crisp and K. W; feandtord t engineer). Leave of absence. was granted to Cr. C. oherwood. Grounds for Cricket The works committee reported having received a deputation from Ghe Horowhenua Cricket Assoeia-* lion in regard to the preparation of wickets in Levin. As a resuit of the associationrs request the committee recommended that the weekly watering and rolling on the two pitches on the Levin Park Domain and one on the Weraroa Reserve be acceded to, the association having expressed a willingness to make an additional paynumt 'oowards ithe upkeep oi the grounds as their finances would permit. The committee also recommended the preparation of two practice wickets, one on each ground. The council adopted both recommendations. The orincinal of Horowhenua College, Mr. N. A. Byrne, made application for the use of the Levin Park Domain for cricket practice from 2.45 to 3.40 p.m. 011 Tuesdavs and Thursdays and from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays, both inclusive, during the remainder of the year. The works committee recommended that permission be pranted, provided the college aid not use the match wickets but prepared and mahitahi-* ed their own in a position to be approved by the engineer. — Adopted. Use of Domain An application was received from Mr. J. R. Macfarlane for the use of the Levin Park Domain on the afternoon of November 17 for the purpose of a publie display by the Levin marching teams. Permission was granted, the Mayor commenting that wherever the girls' marching teams were functioning they had been worthwhile. It gave the e.irls an interest, esprit de corps and smartness in appearance, he added. The Levin Combined Amateur Atliletic and Cycling Club sought the use of the Levin Park Domain on Tuesday evenines each week throughout its season, commencing on November 5, for sDorts meetings. No cliarge would be made for ad■nission. The request was granted. Miscellaneous Matters The Levin branch of the Plunket Society conveyed its thanks to tne council for a donation of £10. Tiie Levin MunicipaJ Band wrote enquiring if the council would grant it the exclusive use of the oandroom on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings for practice purposes. This was acceded to, the Mayor remarKing that if the oana was so ehthusiastic it shouid liave every consideration. Actention was drawn by the worxs committee to the bad condioion of Oxford Street, from Mako Maico Road to Beach Road. It recommended tha't the Main Hirdiwavs Board be requested to Pive eaiiy attention to this matter. A letter was received from the Levin branch of the National Party in conneciicn with the visit of its leader, Mr . S. G. Holland, to Levin on November 1 at 2 n.m., asked nermission to relay his speech intoOxford Street in the event of an, overflow audicnce. The letter added that it was intended to record Mr. Holland's address and asked approval to it being broadcast through loudspeakers in the town the same evening. _ Both requests were granted, subject to the anproval of the police ,and traffic lnspector 'be,iiig obtained,- and- that the record was not broadcast after 9 p.m. A request was made by the Horowhenua Rugby Union for the re.nission of a poruon of th;ates on Rugby Park for the year ended March 31, H46, on similar lines to last year. The rates on the ground amount to £49 ls. The Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce wrote asking if the council could free the res.idents of Cambridge Street and the school area of the odour from the outlet at the gasworks. It was pointed out that this was largely due to the unsatisfactory type of coal at present being received. The matter was referred to the engineer to see if anything could be done.
