Amateur Championship Play " CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 20. The defeat of the Canterbury chainpion, Miss Z. Hudson, by Mrs. J. K. Dolan (Otago), was the only major upset when the second round of the New Zealand Women's amateur golt championship was completed at Shirley ycsterday. Miss Hudson, a six handicap player, was expeeted to beat Mrs. Dolan who plays off 11 aad, indeed, led two up with three holes to be played. Her breakdown was unexpected. Mrs. Dolan played solidly and deserves credit for the manner in'which she aecepted the chances offered her to turn defeat into an unexpected and dramatic victory. ..All other six seeded players left after the. def ault of Miss C. Bmith (Invercargill) won their matehes by handsome margins. ' The course was iu perfect order although it offered the players something of a problem because of the contrast it presented eomparel with" the wet conditions experienced oh Friday. t Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) was in excellent form against Mrs. R. Ferguson (Miramar)/ winning 6 and 5. The winner' played an excellent long game and , putted well but Mrs. Ferguson approached most accurately and the score did not flatter the loser. Steadier golf gave Mrs. H. Toplis (Nelson) a convincing win over Mra. H: A. L'awless (Otago). Mrs. Topliss' advantage in length off the tees was p^rhaps the decisi've factor. In an interesting game, Mrs. P. R. Glanville, a seven handicap player from Te Awainutu, was four up at the turn in" her game against Miss R. Pagni (Titirangi), going out in 41. Miss Pagni did sonie good work round the greens but was hgliting a lOsing battle all the way, Miss R." Hodges (Auckland) played aecuratd golf in" addition to obtaining great length off the tees, in beating Mrs. C. F. O.'Oonnor (Hamilton). At tlie 31th (380 yards) Miss Hodges was well th rough the green with her second. Mrs. O'Connor had trouble with driviug and could not recover. Two evenly matched players in Mrs. B. Andrews (Hokitika) and Mrs. G. H. (jhapman (Hawke's Bay) had a great st.ruggle which took them to the nineteenth green before Mrs. Andrews won. It was her second close game in two r.ounds of the championship. Two local players in Mesdames C. J. Ward and H. A. Penn won their matehes comfortably and Miss II. Buchanan (Christchurch) beat a very promising golfer in Miss S. Banks (Cambridge). Others who will contest the thlrd round. are Mrs. S. Macrae (Wellington), Mrs. Welton Hogg (Wellington), Miss D. Todd (Masterton), Mrs. J. B. Hatrick (Miramar) and Mrs. P. Andrew (Titirangi/ The lirst round of the New Zealand Plate for the 32 players eliminated in the lirst round of the championship, was also played.
