COAL DIVERTED TO STRANDED SHIP

Received Saturday, 12.25 a.m. LONDON, Oct. IS. While the vessel Samwiuged has been stolidly ploughing her way across tlie Pacifie since October 8 bouncl from Portland, Oregon, for New Zealand with just over 7000 tons of coal for the Railway Departineut — 1500 tons less than she was scheduled.to take, owing to the Local strike — wireless messages, cable and telephone conversation's have been in progress about her. Lying nt Honolulu since September 22 unable to move because of lier einptv coal bunkers, is tlie Enipire Duchess. The British ilin Istry of Transport lias been making everv attenipt to get coal for her, even considering sliipping some back from Singapore. Hearing of tlie Bamwinged, they set tlie cables going with the result that the New Zealand Government agreed that she shall be diverted to lloiiolulu to unload 7000 tons of coal for the stranded Enipire Duchess. The Minislry, whicli agreed to pay all extra expeuses, expressed its warm apprecia tion of the cooperation, to the New Zealand Goveruinent. 1
