CROQUET SEASON OPENS

The opening of the croquet season in Otaki took place yesterday in dull- weather, but, nevertheless, the attendance of players-and visitors was a large one. All thoroughly enjoyed the day's outing and several interesting competitions, in which "mere man" participated, were played, while afternoon tea was a welcome diversion. Mr. W. Wiison, president of the Otaki Bowling Club, officiated at the opening, and after apologising for the unavoidable absenee of Mrs. Wildon, congratulated the club and expressed the hope that the season would be an enjoyable one. It was with regret that he made reference to the passing of several of the old players, but pleasing to be able to welcome new ones. The club, he pointed out, had been in existence for nearly 38 years, a year or so after the formaLion of the bowling club. Mr. Wiison, after officially declaring the season open, hit the first ball and was warmly applauded on his splendid effort.
