NEW AWARD PROVISIONS

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 17. A demand for a five-day week for domestics and nursing aids in hospitals, has been served by ihe ITotel Workers' Hnion on all hospitals in Christchurch. The new award, for which proceedings will begin in Conciliation Council tvithin a few days, is the first which has sought to include in its scope private hospitals in the city. The private hospitals have received Ihe news with alarm and this morning a deputation from them will wai t- on ihe Minister of Health, Hon. A. IL Nordmeyer, who is in Christchurch. "Babies do not. work to a 40-hour week sehedule. The only effeet of this new award will be thaf we. will have to close down," said ATiss E. G. Trotter. matron of the. Lyndhurst , private obstetrie. hospital. The proposal, she said, was fantastic in view of the present sfafiing difficullies. SL George 's Hospital has also be.en eited as a party to the award. The matron said today that under presen f Rtafifirig eonditions the new provisions asked for would be impossilile. "E\i dently people should not bc sick over Ihe weeli-ends, " she said.
