Bowling Club's Teams The Levin Bowling Club will be represented by the following rinks at the officiai openings of other clubs on Saturday: — At Levin Ladies' Club: Gardner, Moss, Lett, Walker (s) ; and Rolston, Scott, Bowden, Ma'ckay (s). Speculation in Businesses Representations are to be made to the Government by the Master Grocers' Federation urging that the saies of all businesses should be subject to some measure of control in the same manner as saies of property. This was announced by the president, Mr. H. A. Fanselow. Such control, he stated, would not only protect a buyer but would also put an end to the present growing malpractice of speculating m grocery businesses.--Australian Dairy Cattle A marked decline in the number of dairy cattle in Australia is reported. Figures recently issued by the Commonwealth Government show that there are now only 4,606,000 dairy cattle in Australia compared with almost 5,000,000 in 1943. The only State to show an increase in dairy' cattle is Western Australia. In spite of this decline, liowever, the annual production of butter in Australia over this period has risen by 8000 tons and now stands at 150,000 tons. Inereased Birthrate A wave of additional children was now converging on primary schools, said Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., candidate for the Otaki electorate when commenting during the course of his campaign in Levih last night, that the birthrate in New Zealand during 1945 was the highest for 24 years. There' were, he said, 10,300 more babies born in 1941 than 1936. Unfortunately, he added, this had coincided with the housing and building shortage. Ratepayers' Meeting Tonight Ratepayers of the Levin Borough will have an opportunity at a public meeting in the Century Hall tonight at 8 p.m. of hearing fully of the loan proposals for various public works in Levin. They will be explained by the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) and members of the council, and ratepayers are urged to attend to gairi a knowledge of the work proposed in readiness for the loan poll which will'be taken on October 23. Attacked and Robbed Attacked suddenly by a man who entered his shop in Auckland at about five o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Mr. J. John, aged 43, a licensed dealer, was battered about the face and lost consciousness. He came to an hour later with his wrists bound by a tie which his assailant had removed from Mr. John's neck. The victim's clothes were ransacked and a small sum of money stolen from the office. Mr. "John was"admitted to hospital with a fractured cheekbone and concussion. National Security Tax Referring to Mr. Fraser's announcement in Auckland on Tuesday that the sixpence in the pound National Security Tax would be lifted in the next financial year, Mr. J. Thorn, Labour Party candidate for the Otaki electorate, said in Levin last night that the Government had been anxious to lift it sooner. Mr. Thorn said that they had wanted to dispose of it this session, but that it was on the advice of their financial advisers that it was decided to hold it over till the next financial year. Experimental Plum Shipment An experimental consignment of six trays of plums, which were sent bv Mr. S. A. McCauley, or Roxburgh, to England aboard the Port Huon, arrived in London in perfect condition, sTates the Oamaru Mail, quoting a letter received by Mr. McCauley from the chief steward of the vessel, Mr. W. Common, in whose keeping the fruit had -been placed. Writing from London, Mr. Common stated that the plums were in perfect cohdition on arrival after having been kept in a temperature of about 40 degrees throughf out the voyage.
