NEW ZEALAND RECORDS COMPARED WITH OVERSEAS

As a means of comparison between New Zealand. athletes and overseas performers, a list of current world amatcur records is liere matelied wj.th a list of tlie best performances by New Zealand atliletes. The last eolunrn of iigures sliows, in the running and hurdling events, the distance by whicli the New Zealand record holder. would have been beaten had he raced against the world record holder. Many of the New Zealand performances cited are not New Zealand re■cords, but they are in every case the v best effort by a New Zealander. Where

several have equalled a performance, the most recent instance is quoted. It will be seen that New Zealand athletes have sonie distance to go before they can compete with the foremost athletes overseas, particularly in field events where the Dominion records lag far behind. • In traek events the difference is not as pronounced as the figures indicate. Nearly all New Zealand records were put up on grass tracks which are definitely slower than the cinder tracks in use overseas. It is probable that in the shorter events, this f actor would halve the difference between the New Zealand and world records.
