TRADE COUNCIL'S CRITICISM
By Telegraph—
DUNEDIN, Oct. 14. The reeent decisions of the Stabilisation Commission were severely criticised by delegates at a meeting of the Otago Trades Council. It was stated that, while the council agreed with the principles of stabilisation and price control, it took • strong exception to the Commission utilising its powers to applv a i>olicy of fixation to the wages and salary structure of workers without paying due regard to other factors oper'atin'g to reduce their purchasing power. "In the l'ight of recent events whereby the people in the higher strata of society had been afforded material increases," adds the statcment, "the council is of tlie opinion that the present structure should be thoroughlv examined with the object of placing the wage and salary workers on a footing with the other' members of the community. IVhen stabilisation projiosals were first mooted the council had grave doubts as to their equitable operation, but, in common with other trades councils, recognised it was a war measure, and on that seore refrained from undue critieism, although well aware of the weakness of the structure."
