Woman Badly Burned When a four-rooraed house at Palmerston caught flre on Sunday morning the owner and occupier, Miss Catherine Day, single, aged 76, suffered severe . burns, and was taken to the Dunedin Hospital. Her condition is serious. The house was destroyed. Bowling Club Openings Invitations have been received by the Levin Central Bowling Club to be represented at the following green openings on Saturday next, October 19: Hokowhitu, Otaki, Shannon (one rink to each) and Levin Ladies (two rinks). Any members wishing to participate in these openings are asked to coinmunicate with the secretary by Thursday. Wild Pigs Kill Lambs Wild pigs on the bush farms out from Wanganui have been responsible for no little mortality among lambs this season. According to farmers' who have suffered from the ravages of pigs most of the damage is done by boars and every effort is being made to track' down and shoot these pests. On one property recently two large boars were destroyed and clear evidence found of those having been responsible for the ' killing of a number of young lambs. Weather Retards Crops Officers of the Department of Agriculture report that crops in the whole of the agricultural district, outside the Auckland province and excepting Hawke's Bay, are well behind, mostly being retarded by late planting, which in its turn was caused by the cold, wet and windy conditions. The Taranaki grass planting and silage preparation was also held .up owing to these deterrent factbrs. Exact figures for the whole pf the area are not yet to hand and acco'rdingiy no precise information can be stated at the moment. Women and Beach Wear "If any Napier woman wears a bathing costume on our beaches during the coming summer which brings ridicule or censure upon herseif, then there will be no rise her coming to me for sympathy, because she will receive lione," said the Mayor of Napier, Mr. T. W. Hercock. Commenting on the action which other New Zealand local authorities were planning to take to prevent the wearing of.Gstring bathing costumes, Mr. Hercock said that to his knowledge nobody had ever been ordered off a Napier beach for wearing indiscreet costumes. Early Ruch for Ration Books A steady flow of business from 9 a.m. till closing time was how the Levin postmaster (Mr. L. A. Whitham) described the public's reaction to the issue of the new ration books, which commenced yesterday. Besides coping with the normal enquiries, over 700 ration books

were issued by the staff. There were no long queues, however, and pressure was fairly heavy throughout the day. This morning there was a slackening in the demand, but it is expected that as the final flay approaches, there will be the usual last-minute rush. In order that pressure can be lifted from the Levin Post Office, the ration books are being made available at Manakau, Ohau and Weraroa. The final day of issue will be Friday, October 25, but the postal authorities are anxious that the public draw the new books as soon as possible. Pill Vendor Fined In a reserved judgment Mr. Willis, S.M., Dunedin, found David Mitchell, homeopathist, guilty of four charges of breaches of. the Medical Advertisements Act, 1942, and regulations under the Act. The charges had arisen from a publication by Mitchell of a certain advertisement on a bottle of arsenicum pills, which claimed that the pills would alleviate among other things, cancer, dropsy and epilepsy, and also a certain advertisement which did not contain the true name of the person for whom or on whose behalf. the advertisement was published, or the address of his place of residence or business. Similar charges were laid in respect of a bottle of mercurius pills. Mitchell was fined £5 with costs (10s) on each of the first two charges.. On the other two charges he was ordered to pay costs (JOs).
