CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 13. With a sprint that bronght him home 20 yards ahead of his nearest rival, E. Maguigan (Blackball) won the first Waimate-to-Christchurch 145-mile road cycle' raee field since 1941. The winner rode oft" the 44min. mark and it was plain from the outset that this bunch would have to be reckoued with. At Timaru they had' overtaken the 50min. bunch and at this stage Maguigan and B. Chapman were going particularly . well. At Ashburton Maguigan 's bunch had picked up still more time and had gatliered in the 5Smin. men. At Rakaia this strong riding group was 14 minutes behind the leaders and it looked as if it had an impossible task to catch them. They forged on grimly into an ever freshening wind, however, and when the leaders were slowed by deep shingle after lea\Ting the main road at Sockburn, Maguigan and his co-markers canght them. Pastest time of 6hr. 13min. lOsec. went to M. Drake who rode off the 6min. mark. His buncli had bad liick, losing H. Smither, one of its best. riders, right at the start. The nearest scratch man, R. Whiston, finished live minutes behind Drake. Hubbard rode a solid raee for the junior fast'est time. He returned 6hr. 2(imin. 34sec. and was only 13 minutes behind that of Drake. The placings: — B.
