Autoshine, who lost ground at the start, linished fast on the outside and was just nosed out of the moiiey. The hot favourite Belle Zorro began fairly well and oeeupied a handy position to the straight, but she failed to put any dash into her linisking effort. Favourite Narrowly Wins. On the strength of iirst day 's form and with W. J. Broughton in the saddle, Lord Elgin was instailed a lirm fa vour* ile i'or the pri'neipai event, the Eere Nikitini Memorial Stakes, and, although he duly succeeded, the Eiccar-ton-traiued gelding had to be shaken up over the linal stage to narrowly defeat The Grand, who showed substantiai improvement on his previous fSatunlay 's showiug. Lord Elgin pulled his way to the frout passing the kalfmile, aud led into the straight from Master Baron, Eoyal Duce, The Grand, Spurkling Ladv and Barrage. At the distance Lord Elgin looked to be a eomfortable winner, but The Grand tken issued a strong ehallenge and had the favourite doiug his best to win by a head. Backed down to odds-on, Soneri again deinonst rated her class by beating Ihe spr'inters with ridicitlous ease in the Waiorongomai Handicap. She began well, and passing the half-mile was witliin striking distance of the pacemakers Tuis, \\*hitc Cap aud 1'eter Gazclle, who were racing abreast.
