OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL MEETING The second day of the Otaki races on Saturday was favoured with lovely weather and. in eonsequence the attendance was even greater than on the first day. The management of the club was again very satisfactory, and officers are to be congratulated on the able way in which they carried out their multifarious duties. The racing was of a very satisfactory nature, and although the fields were not as large as the first day the racing was just as interesting, if not more so than on the first day. One or two substantial dividends were paid. Had it not been for fractious horses at the starting barrier the races would have been well up to time. The sum of £80,550 was put through the the totalisator, an increase on the first day which was considered exceptional. In the hurdle race Bay Robe, the first day's winner, had to give way to Thunderhead. a fine bay gelding, trained at Awapuni by Mr. Parker. It was a good race, won only by half a length, with a neck separating the second and third horses. The winner was ridden by A. G. Waddell, this being his first ride over hurdles. Tortago, owned by Mr. G. Lamb, of Manakau, won the First Trial Plate. In the Pukekaraka Handicap Genghiz Khan, owned and trained by Mr. Kohe Webster proved the winner by nearly a length from Lady Burford. The Memorial Stakes was a very interesting race, when Lord Elgin, trained at Riccarton, beat the locally-owned and trained, The Grand, by a head. The Trial Plate, No. 2, was won by Follow Suit, trained at Foxton. It was a comfortable win, and one which paid a big double-figure alvidend. The Otaki Hack was won by Iron Duke by a length, with half a length between second and third. The Waiorongomai Handicap was won comfortably by Soneri, but Deprive and Oay Lena fought a good finish for second place: Soneri is trained at Otaki by D. J. Burgess. The last race of the day, the Rahui Hack, was nicely won by Nanaaki. The most successful jockey of the day was W. J. Broughton, who rode two firsts, a second and two thirds. A. G. Waddell and Bowry rode a first and a second each, Shaw, W. Johnson, Connor and Aitken one each, Clutterbuck a second and a third, Andrews, Boreham, Spratt and' Jenkins a second each, A. Johnson two thirds, Walters, Anderson and Ford a third each.
