LOCAL AND GENERAL

Personal Mrs. S, W. Barber, of Moutoa, journeyed to Hastings last week and is staying with her mother, Mrs. O. Upton, for a- fortnight. The many friends of Mr. D. McLaggan will regret to hear that he has found it necessary to enter Palmerston North Hospital for treatment. Visitors to Shannon yesterday were Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Mortimer, Senr., and Mr. C. J. Mortimer, Junr., of Auckland. During their stay they have been looking up many friends in the district. They are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Colin Mortimer while in this town. Euchre Afternoons Popular The Tuesday afternoon euchre parties run under the auspices of the Anglican Ladies' Guild are still being well patronised. The points prizes for the second of a series of ten afternoons were won by Mrs. A. E. Tremewan first and Mrs. D. Harris second. A consolation prize was won by Mrs. Thomson. The third and concluding series has started. Buses for Athletic Ball Residents of Shannon and the surrouhding districts who intend travelling on the free buses to the Levin Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's plain and fancy dress masquerade ball, to be held in the Regent Ballroom, Levin, next Wednesday evening, are reminded that they must purchase tickets which will be olippecl by the drivers. Tickets may be purchased at V. Tippler's, "Chronicle" Office, Miss J. Birch, C/- N. Birch, and Miss Chester, C/- Ilyde's stationery. Stock Left in Sale Yards That stock is left in the ,sale yards i'or lengthy periods following a sale day is perturbing to residents living in the vicinity of - the yards. An animal put in a small cattle pen on Monday morning was still there 011 Friday afternoon, there being not a blade of grass to eat or a drop of water to drink during its captivity. Whenever the matter is brought to the notice of the Shannon Borough Council, that body-has endeavoured to induce the owners of the yards to take action, but the praelice still eontinues. Surely tlie farmers in this district are human enough to take more interest in the well-being of their stock, and not rely on the public of the town to feed and water animals .. carelessly -forgotten after, a sale. The practice is becoming far too much of a habit lately, and it is high time more drastic action was taken against offenders.
