MAKERUA'S GREAT ADVANCE

PROBLEMS OF ROADING "Probably the greatest advance in recent years in any part of the county is that which has been made by the Makerua district," said the chairman, Mr. G. A. Monk, at a meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Friday, in discussing the present and probable future roading requirements of that area. He was replying to remarks by Cr. J. H. P. Liggins, to the effect that some settlers felt rathed disappointed at the delay which was taking place. Continuing, Mr. Monk said it was admitted that more roads were necessary, but what he wanted members of the council to do was to give consideration to whether they were entirely a local matter, or whether part of it should n'ot be a national responsibility. In the next few years a hu°-e river diversion scheme was likely in the Makerua area, and such things as these would have to be taken into consideration. Mr. Monk said the actingengineer (Mr. W. H. Fraser) was preparing data, and when a survey had been made to get an idea of routes and costs the council could give consideration as to just how it was to be hnanced. "The settlers may feel that we are not proceeding as fast as we should," added Mr. Monk, "but this is a matter in which we must show some foresight and be careful. The council is sympathetic to it, though that will not build roads."
