STATE EMPLOYEE BURNED TO DEATH

: NAPIER, Friday. An employee of the State Hydroworks, Clarence James Pierce, aged 31, was burned to death in a hut at Bayview, near Napier, at four o'clock this morning. Pierce was living in one of several one-man huts near Bayview railway station. When the alarm was given four workmen found Pierce's hut a mass of flames and they were unable to make a rescue. The charred remains of Pierce were found when the fire was extinguished. Pierce was a single man, of Hastings, and had been engaged in erecting power pylons for the State Hydro Department.
