RED CROSS SOCIETY

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION HELD Visitors from all parts of the district were entertained at Laurvig's Hall on Saturday afternoon by the ladies of the Shannon Red Cross committee. The hall was tastefully decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies, arum lilies, spring flowers and green shrubs, and a glowing fire added to the cheerful atmosphere. The guests were welcomed by the president, Mrs. J. A. Easton, who made them feel quite at home immediately. All present participated in competitions during the afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed listening to itemS of elocution by two young performers, who were warmly applauded. Miss Patricia Lee gave an excellent performanee of a recitation entitled "Mrs. Packlebury's Children's Party," while Miss Pamela Clayton cleverly eontributed her choice, "Obedience." Miss Bowen, president of the Levin Red Cross Society, enlightened those present on the activities of the Red Cross and Mrs. Ward gave a brief description of Red Cross work as performed in the district from whence she came. Both ladies were thanked by Mrs. Easton for their interesting addresses. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the committee. A competition for a cake donated by Mesdames Campbell and S. Barber was won by Mrs. Thorne. A collection for Red Cross funds was taken up during the afternoon and realised £2 11s 3d.
