PARAPARAUMU NOTES
(From "Chronicle" Correspondent) There was a touch of sadness in many hearts, especially those of their near neighoours, when they watched the furniture of Mr. and Mrs. H. Sheargold being loaded to a lorry prior to being moved to Wellington. For eighteen years Mr. 1 Sheargold has been manager of the 1 Paraparaumu Co-operative stores. Always cheerful and obliging, Mr. Sheargold will be greatly missed at the store. Mrs. Sheargold will also be greatly missed for her cheery presence and willingness to assist in all the activities of the district. She was one of the foundation members of the Women's Institute of the district and a member of the Anglican Women's Gu'ild and j Mothers' Union, both of whom pre- J sented her with gifts of remembrance. i A large meeting of residents of the various parts of the district was held to discuss ways and means of providing a memorial civic - centre for the district in general. The Progressive Association also has a project in view of a surf club building and hall at the beach. A very painful and serious accident was suffered by Mr. Mervyn Donovon when he fell and broke his leg in two places. Mr. Donovon is now in hospital, progressing as well as can be expected. For some weeks a Pekin duck has three or four times a week been presenting her owner with an egg weighing 6 ozs. To suddenly find his brooder ' house issuing volumes of smoke was the exeperience of Mr. F. H. Clarkson. Fortunately, the chickens were rescued, having had the sense to run from under the house when the lamp ' caught fire and ignited the litter. Prompt action saved the building. The Waikanae-Reikorangi Women's Institute celebrated their 17th birthday with a flower show and several items of entertainment given by the members. Many visiting members of other institutes were present. The cake was cut by Mrs. Powell, president of the South Wellington . Federation, and Mrs. Tabor, secretary of the South Wellington Federation. The show was ! a very fine one, many beautiful ! flowers being exhibited, while the fancy work was of a very high standard. A happy evening was spent by all in the Anglican Hall, Paraparaumu, when the shareholders, dire.ctor§ and .. staff .of . the ..Paraparaumu Co-operative Stores, together with many residents, met to farewell Mr. and Mrs. Sheargold. Mr. Sheargold has been manager of the Paraparaumu Co-operative Store for eighteen years, during which time his happy and cheerful personality has endeared him to all. From the directors and shareholders Mr. Sheargold received an : eight-day clock, and from the staff a smoker's stand in New Zealand | woods. The residents presented him with a substantial cheque. All wished him many happy and healthful years to enjoy his retirement from business. Beautiful bouquets from the W.D.F.F. and the W.I. were presented to Mrs. Sheargold, together with their good wishes for her future hap- 1 piness. Dancing and supper were all enjoyed and a pleasant evening concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
