COMMITTEE STARTS INQUIRY

WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. A speeial committee of inquiry into obstetrical services in New Zealand, commenced its sittings in Wellington today under the chairmanship of Dr. T. F. Corkill. It will investigate every phase of the question with partieular reference to the urgent problem of staffing of maternity hospitals and number of beds available, and will prepare a report with recommendations for presentation to the Minister of Health, Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer. Other members of Ihe committee are Dr. Doris Gordon, Director of the Division of Maternal Welfare, Dr. Mary Douglas, Miss H. Hamilton, representing the New Zealand Registered Nurses Association, Mrs. Forde, of Wellington, representing the ^National Council of Women and MrsT Gilmour, of Lyttelton, representing the Plunket Society. The committee will sit in Wellington and Auckland and will take evidence from private and public maternity hospital authorities and from doctors. Its sittings will last until October 18.
