PERCUSSION BAND FORMED
ASSET TO SHANNON SCHOOL Following a very fine concert given in Shannon towards the end of November last year by the combined effort of Mrs. R. R. Lind, Miss L. Lind and Miss N. Peach and their pupils, Mrs. Lind handed the proceeds of the concert to the Shannon School to be expended on school equipment, the nature^ of which was to be determined by the headmaster (Mr. Dickenson) and members of his staff. It was finally decided to purchase instruments for a percussion band. Unfortunately the instruments were unobtainable in New Zealand at that time. During the current year, however, an Auckland firm advised the headmaster that percussion band instruments were available, and so a.^ufficient number were purchased -to form a well balanced band. The instruments have been delivered now for some time and the primer pupils of the school have acquired considerable proficiency in theil: Use. The school has beeh Very fortunate in twice securing the services of Mr. Richard Lind, a music specialist, for the purpose of instructing pupils in the use of the instruments. Thanks to the skilf ul teaching and the, enthusiasm of Miss J. Shanks, i&laiit mistress* of the school, the children are progressing to that point where it is hoped they will be , .advanced enough to render' an item at the school's music festival shortly to be held in Shannon and elsewhere. The generous gift made to the school by these ladies and their pupils was a gesture much appreciated, and one which would give an impetus to music in Shannon.
