HUGE STOCK LOSSES
Eeceived rriday, 9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 4. The huge slieep losses through the drought in 1944 and 1945, are revealed in statistics issued today by the Commonwealth Statistician. Since the beginning of 1942, when the sheep number reachecl a maximum of 125,000,000, there has been an annual decrease which, over the whole period, amounted to 29,000,000 or 23 per cent. At the end of March this year, before the recent disastrous droughts, the figure of 96,400,000 was the lowest recorded for Australia since 1924. From almost 5,000,000 in March, 1943, the number of dairy cattle decreased to 4,607,000.
