FORTNXGHTLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) and Crs. W. Clayton, R. R. Lind, ,D. Higgie, J. Curran and E. Perry. Apologies for absence were received from CrS. J. A. Roach and H. Aitchison. A'letter was received from Cr. J. A. Roach, thanking the Mayor and Councillors for their cheery letter received while he was ill. Cr. Roach stated that his health was improving. Correspondence was also received from the Shannon Cricket Club, asking permission to play cricket on the domain during the coming season. On a motion by Cr. Clayton, permission was granted. A telegram was read by the town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) from Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., expressing his good wishes to all his friends at Shannon, and stating that he hoped to visit Shannon before Christmas. It was resolved that a letter be written to Mr. Lowry, expressing the council's pleasure that his health was improving. A circular letter was received drawing attention to the municipal conference to be held at Rotorua during March of next year. Metal for the formation of a footpath was granted a resident in Nathan Terrace. An application was also received from a resident of the same street, but as the metal was required for a motor car entrance it was agreed that the applicant be advised that metal could only be supplied for the formation of footpaths. The town clerk reported that he had received a reply from the Wellington City Council, advising that the Milk Department had three horses for sale. Cr. Lind pointed out that these horses were halfdraught and were much too light for the council's work. An offer of a horse from Foxton also proved unsuitable. The Mayor stated that the position with regard to a horse was very serious, and it was only through the generosity of Cr. Higgie that the council was able to carry on important work in the borough. Cr. Lind asked that the full council should inspect the storm water channel at the State houses, and also the Thomson Street bridge. It was decided that the inspections be carried out next Saturday morning. Cr. Perry stated that he had made arrangements with the manager of the dairy factory for a supply of waste acid to be used in connection with the cleaning of the war memorials. Cr. Perry suggested that the council should write to ! a Wellington firm in an endeavour to obtain a possible formula as used in cleaning concrete buildings in the city, which might be a safer method than using acid. It was agreed that the town clerk endeavj our to obtain that information. Accounts amounting to £37 9s 6d were.p.assed for paymept., , , , .
