ROLL OF HONOUR UNVEILED
IHAKARA DlSTRICT'S TRIBUTE TO SERVICEMEN __ J On Sunday, September 22, residents of the Ihakara district filled the .public hall to capacity. The purpose of the gathering was to hold a memorial service and to unveil a roll-of honour which. had been erected in the Ihakara Hall to commemorate the sacrifi.ee and service of the men and women of the district who served in the armed forces during the years of war 1914-18 and 1939-45. The roll of honour bore the following names:— 1914-18: R. Buttj P. E. A. Curtis, J. Gordon-Glassford, M. H. E. Gorringe (killed) , W. Graham, H. Kemp, E. H. Law (killed), J. H. Rolston, G.H. Burns, E. H. Denton (kiklled), J. D. G. Gordon-Glassford (killed), A. Graham, R. W. Horne, A. M. Law, W. J. Law and C. R. Sharman (killed) . 1939-45: J. Barley, I. Benton, S. Eagle, L. B. E. Easton (killed) , J. Elsmore, R. Hall, J. Hassell, E. Hensman, J. Johnson, T. Lancaster, N. J. McLeod (killed) , Pat McLeod, P. O'Donnell, D. Denton. F. Carlyle, A. S. Easton, H. Elsmore, A. Fowler (killed), D. Hare, P. Hudson, H. Hensman, S. Kerr (killed) , Keith McLeod, Miss P. Noble, D. Pollard,F. Rolston (killed) , J. Siddall,. J. Taplin, M.'B. Olivecrona, L. Spicer, E. R. Taylor and N. O. Taylor., The service was conducted by Rev. A. Salmond, M.A., C.F., the Scripture reading, prayer of remembrance and Benediction being taken by the Rev. H. S. Kings, C. F. The occasional addresses were delivered by Cr. A. O. Powell, of Levin, who was acting as deputy for His Worship the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) , by Mrs. W. S. Stewart, who spoke as a representative of the Ihakara Women's Institute, and by Mr. J. H. Taylor, an old identity of the district. Mr. Taylor spoke of the sacrifices of those who served, and paid a tribute to all mothers who had given the community sons, fit and ready to serve in the hotir of need. The sacrifi.ee involved in the watching and waiting of mothers was the main theme of Mr. Taylor's remarks. After the act of unveiling performed by Mr. Taylor, the "Last Post" was sounded by Bugler G. R. Lester. During the proceedings Miss J. Forsyth presided - at- the piano. A tribute should be paid to Mr. George Armstrong, of Ihakara, in carrying through x the detailed arrangements neeessary for such an occasion, which has great significance in the community life of che district.
