YOUNG FARMERS' CLUBS
DISTRICT COMMITTEE REVIVED MEETING OF DELEGATES Delegates from the Levin, Otaki, Paraparaumu and Johnsonville Young Farmers' Clubs gathered at a meeting held in the office of the Rehabilitation Department, Levin, recently, when the Horowhenua District Committee of Young Farm- ; ers' Clubs was again revived. During the war years the only club in the district remainmg on the active list was the Levin Young Farmers' Club, all others going into recess through loss of personnel and for other reasons. Since the end of the war, however, the Otaki and Johnsonville Clubs have been revived and a new club has been formed at Paraparaumu. The last meeting of Horowhenua District Committee was held in April, 1949. Present at this revival meeting were: Messrs. H'. J. Lancaster, M. Rolston and S. Gimblett (Levin Glub) ; M. Holmes, B. Fogden and A. Jepson (Otaki Club) ; G. C. Maclean, D. Corner and B. Mangham (Paraparaumu Club); J. Best, A. Pope, S. Nossiter and R. Rowell (Johnsonville Club) ; C. J. Hamblyn, fields superintendent, Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North; Mr. A. V. Lithgow, secretary of Wellington Council of Young Farmers' Clubs, Palmerston North; and Mr. J. M. Hopkins, Department of Agriculture, Levin. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. C. E. C. Webb, Levin, Federated Farmers' delegatt to the Levin Club, and A. Bryant, senior advisory member of the Johnsonville Club. The election of offieers took plaee and resulted as follows: — Chairman: Mr. M. Rolston (Levin) ; vicechairman: Mr. A. Jepson (Otaki); district secretary: Mr. J. M. Hopkins (Levin) ; delegates to Wellington Council: Messrs. M. Holmes (Otaki) , R. Rowell (Johnsonville) and M. Rolston (Levin) ; executive committee: Chairman, vice-chair-man and secretary. Matters dealt with during the meeting were ways and means of raising district committee funds, district and council shearing competitions, Y.F.C. radio talks from the ZB stations at Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Gisborne and Napier, and the sponsoring of council activities such as athletics, football, educational weeks and stock judging. Mr. Lithgow, Wellington council secretary, was of considerable assistance to the meeting in explaining matters pertaining to fche radio talks, the quest for blood donors for the public hospitals blood transfusion service, and the general scheme of the Y.F.C. memorial to members who had given their lives in the past world conflict. Mr. C. J. Hamblyn spoke generally on the Y.F.C. movement, touching on such subjects as the formation of further Young Farmers' Clubs in districts entailing complete district surveys, the proeuring of lecturers for club meetings, and the general exchange of farming1 informatron " among the clubs. He also. stressed the value of district competitions among clubs, such as stock judging and pasture competitions. Y.F.C. tours were extremely valuable in widening the general knowledge of farming. The next meeting of the Horowhenua District Committee is to be held in Johnsonville on Wednesday, November 13.
