Personal Mr. Don Pigott has left to take up a position in Palmerston North. A weekend visitor_ to Shannon was Mr. Graham McLochlan, of Hamilton. Mrs. J. McGurk, of Petone, who has been the guest of Mrs. E. Perry, returned home during the weekend. Mr. Bason, who has been stationed at the Mangaore Power Station, left on Saturday with Mrs. Bason for Karapiro on transfer. Mrs. T. Parr and her son, Mr. Ron Parr, have returned home after spending a holiday at Whakatane, where they have been the guests of Mrs. Parr's daughter. Bowlers Visit Otaki A rink of Shannon bowlers, comprising Messrs. R. Bibby, V. J. Bateman, A. R. Mills and J. Creigh, journeyed to Otaki on Sunday and spent a most enjoyable day on the green as the guests of the Otaki Bowling Club. Basketball Results In the final matches of the Horowhenua basketball competitions played at Levin on Saturday, the three local teams were defeated in all their games. The A team lost to St. Joseph's A 6 — 3, the B team lost to College C 7 — 5 and the C team was defeated by College F 5—3. Euchre Winners Prize winners in 'the usual weekly euchre -tournament conducted by the local branch of the Labour Party, and held in Laurvig's Hall on Friday evening, were Mrs. Picard and Mr. Harris. Competitions conducted by the branch were won by Mesdames W- Clough, E. Spring, C. Pedersen, 'Mr. V. J. Bateman and Bobby Gyde. Acute Housin^ Shortage A further example of the serious housing situation in this town was given recently, arising from a claim presented at thV Palmerston North Magistrate'S; Court for the recovery of a tenement, evidence was given that in a two-room annexe to a house ' in Shannon, fourteen people were at present living, having, it was claimed, no other place to go. Preparing for Tennis An energetic working bee spent Saturday morning . on the local tennis courts making preparations fdr the club's opening. Repairs were carried out to the- pavilion and the wire netting fence. It is hoped that material will be forthcoming to topdress three courts and more wire netting will be required for fencing. Club members will be again at work next Saturday morning. Interest in Baseball. There has been much discussion around Shannon lately as to the possibility of forming a local baseball club. It may be remembered that a few years ago two teams from Wellington paid Shannon a visit and played exhibition matches on the local domain in an effort to foster the sport. Clubs are already active in Foxton and Levin, and no doubt if a local club was formed keen competition wduld result. Amenities for Employees Explaining the amenities already provided for employees at the woolpack factory at Foxton, during the course of a visit by the Mayor and councillers of Shannon recentiy, Mr. F. W. Vickerman, managingdirector of the company, said that with a fuller staffing the company hoped to be able to engage a full time matron again and he envisaged in future the provision of not oply medical but dental facilities for employees and a service for the care of footwear, which, if neglected, was the cause of much fatigue. Woman Severely Burnt Severe burns to her head and shoulders were suffered by Mrs. T. Sunley, wife of Mr. T. Sunley, of the power sub-station, Stafford Street, late on Monday evening. It appears that Mrs. Sunley, who was . alone in the room at the time, either fell asleep or suffered a fainting spell and fell into the open fire. Mrs. Sunley was attended by a doctor and later taken to the Palmerston North Hospital by ambulance. Her condition yesterday afternoon was stated to be satisfactory.
