DETERMINED NOT TO LEAVE VOLCANO ISLAND
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. SUYA, Sept. 28. The Polynesian people of the volcano Jilasted island of Niuafoou, are determined to stay at their ancestral home however lively the volcano may be, says tlie Fiji Times' c.orrespondent. This repeats history after " all the previous eruptions which for nearly a eentury have been -r.educing the fertile areas of tlie tiny island. The correspondent says enough is left for tke islajid today to maintain the present population of approximately 1300.. .Niuafpoiq however, will not in this genera'tion or next be more than a shadow of the romantic island which won lyrieal descriptions for visitors in the nineteenth eentury. Frequent quakes are eontinuing in the island and sliarp tremors were f-elt in parts of Fiji ineluding- Snva, on ^hursday night. Nukualofa .was .awakened by a quake earlier in the week. Tongan and Fijian people show a tendency to "blame the atoiuic bombs for everything." The correspondent states that while Ihe destructlon in Niuafoou is wide-j spread and tragic, some irritation was ex-pressed at Nukualofa at '"the way'in which tlie Americans have sensational--ised t'h e- eru ption to absurd lengths.
