WHY RICE IS SHORT

AUCKLAN TD, Sept. 27. Shipping was the key to the problem of the rice shortage which is being experienced in some areas, said the Food Controller, Mr. A. J. Costelle. The rice now being supplied to Asiatics and hospitats was grown in Australia and a coutinuation of supply depended on the regular arrival of shipments. He said hospitals were receiving just enough for patients ordered on to a rice die't by doctors. Tlie Cliinese and Indian consumers were receiving just about half tlieir normal requirements. Tliere was no rice for members of the general public even if their doetors thought it advisable for them to have it. An official of the Auckland Hospital Board said that at the moment they had ample stocks for patients' diet. A member of the Chinese community said he was able to purchaes 501 bs. of rice three months ago but he did not know when he wonld be able to obtain it nest, _ 1
