NOT GIVING ANYTHING AWAY TO SOUTH ISLAND

A proposal to reconiniend tlie diversion to the South Jsland of any new industries using electricity extensively and which could be run economicaJly, was defeat ed at yesterday's session of the Eleetric Power Boards and Supply Authorities Association. The remit was moved by Mr. W. Flaphan (South Taranaki ) who said tliat from experience during the war it might be necessary to manufacture in New Zealand to help out in time of need. At. present there was electricity lu waste in Ghristehurch where ueon Jights were going all night and through clmrch hours on Sunday. "The pi'inciple seems to be a good one," said Mr. AI. E. Lyons (Christchurch; amid laughter when he seconded the remit. Mr. E. Hitchcoek (Christchurch): While I like the idea it seems to ine that compulsory altruism is rather suspee.t. ilon. Mrs. M. JM. Dreaver (Auckland) said it was illogical to trv to control naturo. which caused a drift to the. climate in the Nortli Island. Mr. VV. L. Riehards (Timaru) said this was a chanee for the eonference to express itself unanimously that New Zealand eonsisted of one stretch of land. Fntil facilities were provided in the North Jsland which was attracting population from the South, every encourngement should bc given for industry to come south. Mr. W. J. Gaudin (Wellington) suggested that'the South Island should get some industries of its own.
