RANGIURU STREAM
NEEDED RELIEF OBTAINED For some considerable time the outlet to the Rangiuru Stream, below the lagoon, has been almost completely blocked,- resulting in the creation of swamp areasalong the banks as far north as Tasman Road. Agitation on the part of the property-owners affected resulted in aetion being taken by the Pub!ic Works Department. A "grab" was brought into operation and a wide channel, well to the east of the original outlet, was excavated to release the water from the lagoon into the Otaki River. This caused an immediate drop of over two feet in the level of the stream, giving much needod relief in the affected areas below and directly above the Rangiuru Bridge. Before the drainage of farms on Tasman Road is satisfactory, hov:ver, further work is required to •lean the bed of the stream of the iccumulation of silt caused b" the blockage. The work done so far will not pre*cnt flooding, but it will release flood waters quickly as normal conlitions are restored. It is boped hat the dragline on the Otaki River will commence work shortly, giving further relief.
