JUVENILE HORTICULTURISTS

SCHOOL FLOWER SHOW Over a period of a fortnight teachers in the- lnfant school have been giving spring talks to their small charges. These culminated last Wednesday afternoon with the holding of a flower show, the ' entrants being primers one to four. Behind the idea was a motive. This was to develop the artistic and cul- . tural tastes, and inculcate a love of flowers and interest in nature in the children. The rudiments of art were incorporated for many of the vases and , jars to hold the flowers were paint- : ed, the elforts of some of the chil- ' dren being praiseworthy. They had also been encouraged in their elforts to draw the vases of flowers displayed. Very excited were the young folk when they set oi'i for school wioh the flowers, with whicli they decorated plates and saucers and arranged vases. The former were ' displayed on small tables and the vases on tlie' shelves -around the rooms, the communicating doors of which were thrown open. Two teachers from the upper school j udged the exhibits and the staridards were admitted as spectators. Tickets were displayed denoting th.e placings in the various sections, but no prizes were given, the ommission being in the interests of the children. The awards were as follows: — I Ixrwer infants. — Girls: Decorated vase, Lorraine Vinsen 1, Annette Trcmewan 2, Mary Harkness 3. Fioating bowl, Annette Tremewan 1, Coleen Judd 2, Hui McDowell 3. Boys: Decorated vase, Monania Ropoama 1, Peter Wilson 2 and 3. ; Fioating bowl, Malcolm Shields 1, ' Peter Wilson 2, John Hooper 3. | Upper infants. — Girls: Fioating I bowl, Linda Stratford 1, Zelda Collis 2, Mary Redshaw 3. Boys: FloatI ing bowl, Daniel Cole 1, Ian Hook ' 2, Manuao Pcni 3. Decorated vase, Glynn Harrison 1, Ian Hook 2, Daniel Cole 3. So successful was this show that it is lioped to have another ohe in December, when the parents of thc children will be invited to be present.
