LICENSED VICTUALLERS' BALL

AN OUTSTANDIN G SUCCESS The ball held at the Railway Hall 011 Monday night by the Licensed Victuallers of Otaki was an outstanding success, and it is more than probable that the function will be made an annual one. Visitors were present from all parts of ihe coast, while Wellington in particular was strongly represented. Ouiers canie from different parts of the Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and even from parts of the Auckland district. It was a gay crowd — the number was a record one — and all danced merrily to the spirited music of Mel Creighton's orchestra from Palmerston North, whose music was greatly appreciated. The arrangements throughout were admirably carried out, and much credit is due to the organisers and their lady assistants, who worked m'ost energetically to see that success was attained. The dccorations were of a very attraclive nature, and with the bright iighting were freely admired. A resting" place for many had been arranged at the end of the hall, .lear the entrance, while at the far end, on the stage was a very elaboraie suppor, all kinds of edibles Dcing available. It was a spread that' will not be forgotten for years to comc, and was a reminder of the great spreads made years ago by Maoris. There was pork, other meats, fisli, savouries and other delicacies almost ioo numerous to mention. Needless to say full jusiice was done and praise bestowed upon those responsible. A very prominent and pleasing feature was the lovely dresses worn by the ladies, and it was evident that the drcssmakers' art had been well ta^ed. The dresses were most daintily designed, and were the cynosurc of all present. The M.C.'s were Messrs. W. A. Calwell and F. Rule, who were untiring in their ■/Torts to cater for the enjoyment of all. The programme arranged -.vas a pleasing one, and made more aftractive by the large variety of dances. After the opening waltz came the Hotel Jubilee jazz onestep, later the Family Hotel foxfrot, followed by a snowball waltz, : ' ho Holel Telegrapli ' Twiddlc Excuse-Me fox-trot, and l3i.fr m ihe programme the Railway Hotel razzle-jazz medley. All were entered into with great gusto, while at

the finish dancers were kept busy on a string of varied dances, which concluded with the old-time chair medley, and "God Save the King.' An extra was played by Mr. Pai Sharp. The promoters are certainly worthy of special melltion for theii untiring efforts, and backed up by a small, but very energetlc ladies 'ommittee, most abiy carried ou+ 'heir dutics. It was little wondei that many present asked that thc affair be ma.de an annual one. It it understood that this request will bt granted.
