TRIO APPEAR IN COURT UNDER GUARD

Ilandcuffed together and guarded by 15 police,- Ant'onio Martini, Edward Oarland and Iloyce Oarland ajtpeared in the North Sydney police court today. - Martini was unshavtm and still spartered with blood aud had a bullet wound cxtending from the bridgo of his nose to the scalp. 'All aecused wore charged with attempted niurder. Alar- ; tini and Edward Oarland, agTd 34, wero aiso charged with having housebreak ing impieineiits in their possession with intent to steal, an'd the.Oarland brofhers with -u'sing ■ unlicfe'n'sed pistols. An intimation was givfen that further charges would b'e-preferred.' A remand was granted arid bail was refused. In the series of -gun ba'ttles which preceded ilartiui's "capture over lOn sliots wero fired by tbe police, the Oarland brothcrs and Martini. The poli'-e i' focovered thr'ee pistols and a bandoliei i of amniunition from^Afartim. The Oarland brothcrs 'surrendered when the police lirst surroundered the house in North Sydney from which Martini had r escapcd'a few seconds earlier. Martini fired shots from another house, clambered over fool'tops and was i linallv brought to bay on the fttaircse I of a shop. Detective-Sergeafit Mijch | dropped him with the first shot and Martini foigned death. Martini 's hair and eyebrows wore blcached and coJoured and his face heavily powdered to conceal lii.s dark skiit. The police found a sqitca.se full of gelignite in a nearby back garden. The police alleged that two pistols found in Martini 's possession were stolen from suburban post ofiice strongrooms robbed on Thursday and Bunday last.
