UNEXPECTED TURN IN WAR CRIMES TRIAL

After the reading at the War Crimes Tribunal today, of h statement in which Oshima, former Ambassador to Gerinany, admitted secret dealings with von Ribbentrop, the deputy prosecutor, Mr. Frank Tavenner, said: "1 will prove that negotiations for a military pact were eonuucLed through Japanese military channels. I will prove that tlie Japanese Army was strong enough lo force its wijl upon the Government." The defence took quick advantage of this implication that the civilian leadcrs were foreed into war measures. The defence attorney exclaimed: "That is something new. Is Mr. Tavenner speaking for the entire Drnsecution? ' '

The presiding Justice, 8ir William Webb,. smiled and .pointed out that if the prosecution .statement were proved it niigh mean acquittal on the war plotting charges, for the civilian Gov ernment leaders, members of Cabinet, etc. The Court adjourried to enable the prosecution attorpeys to e.onfer.
